Swimming Pool liners and Liner Pools

Liner pools are, as with nearly all pool related things, divided into 2 categories.

There are inground liner pools, they will be constructed out of blocks and or concrete or they will be a Panel Pool. The principle of a liner pool is that the liner creates the waterproof layer and cosmetic finish of the pool. How the pool is constructed for this type of liner is unimportant, as long as it is strong enough to hold the weight of the water.

The liner can be made in situ, which makes it ideal for repairing leaking structures, or it can be made off site in one piece. If made off site the measurements must be exact or the liner will wrinkle up.

The material that the liners are made from varies, but for inground pools, made in situ, it is 2mm thick and very strong. It carries a 10 year warranty against breaks, tears or leakages. Liners made off site are normally slightly thinner. This is because the 2mm thick liner system would be unmanagable.

The fittings in a liner pool are very different to standard ones, in that they use a 2 part fitting with screws and gaskets to ensure that the joint between the liner and fitting is water proof.

Above ground liner pools are normally constructed from panels bolted together, then the provided liner is put into place to waterproof it. These types of liner are not as thick or strong as the inground types, but they are very durable.

One disadvantage of liner type pools is that they can bleach out if too much chlorine is used, for example if chlorine granules are thrown in the pool. Other than that, they look good and are easier to clean than a traditional tiled pool.

Never drain a liner pool or leave a liner pool without water. If the liner type pool is drained the consequences can be catastrophic. If the pool needs to be drained for any reason, consult a specialist who can assist when the pool is refilled.

In some cases the liner can be salvaged, in this case the damage was too much and the liner was pulled too far out of shape to be able to be put back.
