swimming pool evaporation

What is the normal amount of evaporation on a pool in a very hot windy place? what can I do to minimise the losses through evaporation? my swimming pool is loosing around 2" a week, but the problem I have is that we are supplied water from a well, once the weather gets hot, the well can be a bit iffy, so i need to make sure we have water in the house before i start to think about the swimming pool.
