You get what you pay for. Automatic pool cleaners are no exception. Be careful to choose a type that is suitable for your particular pool, there are different models for gunite pools, tiled pools and so on.

There are 3 types to choose from

Suction type pool cleaners-

Like a vacuum cleaner, it plugs into the skimmer or hoover socket and uses that suction power to move itself around the pool.

The South African Kreepy Krauly suction type pool cleaner, one of the oldest and most well known brands.

These are the most common types of cleaner and are normally the most cost effective, but depends on the type chosen. These move round the pool in a random pattern and after a couple of hours each day, should clean most of the pool.

Pressure type pool cleaners-

These fit onto a jet or return pipe in the swimming pool, they then use the water pressure to blow debris off the walls and floor of the pool into a filter bag that is towed behind. Very effecient and less likely to get stuck.

Electric or robot pool cleaners-

Very expensive, very efficient, electrically powered robots that clean using on board filtration. Due to cost only really suitable for large pools. Either corded and running off a docking station or wireless.

Robot type cleaners are probably the best in terms of performance, they have on board filtration and logic control which ensures that they cover all parts of the swimming pool. They work out the dimensions of the pool, then plan a route that covers the whole pool. Some units have a cable, so not a good idea to swim if the cleaner is operating.
