Automatic Swimming Pool Covers
Automatic covers come in two main types, each has advantages and some downsides. On the whole automatic covers are a great investment, they keep the pool warmer and cleaner, but also give peace of mind because they are SAFE.
Types -
The main types of automatic pool cover are the blue vinyl type that is attached to the sides of the pool by runners. These are very safe and stop entry of dirt, however in heavy rain they collect rain water which has to be pumped off before the cover can be opened, this is not a bad thing as it means that the rain water does not spoil the chemistry of the water. They are also good for preventing evaporation because they sit on the pool surface. Evaporation is the main cause of heat loss in a swimming pool.

The other type is one that looks like a roller shutter, it is constructed from slats of coloured plastic and rolls out across the pool. These are safe, but will let some dirt in, but not leaves etc. They do not have the disadvantage of rain water sitting on the top, so they can normally be opened immediatly.
There are 2 main types of these, they are either installed in a pit at the back of the pool, or installed in a wooden box on the top. Some new pool instalations have the cover in the bottom of the pool.
